Australian Koala Foundation

Body

The Australian Koala Foundation (AKF), established in 1986, is a self-funded non-profit dedicated to conserving wild koalas and their habitats. Led by Chair Deborah Tabart OAM, the AKF has evolved into a global leader in koala research, conservation, community education, and habitat mapping, with the public-accessible Koala Map enabling users to report sightings.

Through persistent lobbying, the AKF achieved the 2012 listing of koalas as “vulnerable” under the EPBC Act and their 2022 classification as “endangered” in QLD, NSW, and the ACT.

The Quinlan’s Vision

For over 20 years, Peter and Julanne Quinlan were dedicated conservationists, passionate about wildlife and committed to preserving their 40-hectare bushland property as a wildlife reserve. Peter, an industrial chemist turned hobby farmer and former Chairman of the Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce, and Julanne, a trained nurse and lifelong learner, generously bequeathed their estate to the Australian Koala Foundation (AKF). Their legacy enables AKF to honour their vision for conservation and sustainability.

Aligned with AKF’s mission, Quinlan’s Research Station serves as a model for landscape protection and sustainable living:

  • Educate the public on Koala conservation and environmental sustainability.
  • Preserve and enhance the property as Koala habitat.
  • Improve infrastructure to honour the Quinlan’s bequest.
  • Operate responsibly with sound financial management.
  • Restore the landscape to safeguard Koalas and other species.

Quinlan’s Research Station exemplifies AKF’s commitment to protecting nature and fostering sustainable practices.

The Australian Koala Foundation and Polyflor Australia joined forces in Brisbane to plant trees, working together to restore koala habitats.
